Dedicated capacities

Fabric? Power BI Embedded? What are they?

Capabilities are Power BI resources that license the Power Embedded solution from Microsoft and allow you to use the API's, legally and unlimitedly, to insert the reports published in the system and not need a license to view the reports.

Without a contracted capacity, using a Pro or PPU account, you have a limited number of tokens for inserting reports. After a while, this limit is reached and Power BI no longer allows you to insert reports and Power Embedded would stop working. For this reason, it is mandatory to have a contracted capacity in order to use Power Embedded.

If someone tries to access the report outside of these times, the report will not open or update the data, as an error message will be displayed stating that the capacity is disconnected.

Power Embedded, when configured, can automatically turn on the capacity to allow them to view the reports and will automatically turn it off after a period of inactivity (defined by you).

Types of capacity (all are supported by Power Embedded):

  • Fabric: Newer, more flexible, more features and can start cheaper.

  • Power BI Embedded: More stable, reliable and can be cheaper on a pay-per-use basis, depending on region and size.

  • Premium by Capacity: Capacity that has been discontinued and the initial cost is 32.000 per month.

Observations:

  • Capacities are contracted directly with Microsoft (or a partner) through Azure.

  • Having a capacity is a requirement for Power Embedded to work.

  • Microsoft gives Fabric a 60-day free trial.

How it's billed

The Embedded capacity charge is calculated on a per-second basis by Microsoft and converted to an hourly rate to generate the final charge, and our system allows you to define the time periods, by day of the week, that the system will be on and outside of these hours, the system itself automatically turns off the capacity.

How to estimate the ideal capacity

To define the most suitable Power BI Embedded or Microsoft Fabric capacity for your scenario, you can send us the quantity and size of each Power BI dataset that will be imported into the platform to get an estimate of which capacity is most suitable for your scenario, but it would take a lot of work to do this survey and it would only be an estimate, as there are several other factors that influence the use of capacity beyond just size.

The best way to make this estimate would be to use Microsoft Fabric's 60-day free trial, where we can run the entire PoC for free, making sure that the current reports are updated and processed using this free trial capacity (F64).

As soon as the workspace is changed to use the Fabric capacity, Power BI starts collecting data and statistics on the actual use of this capacity.

If you are already a Power Embedded customer, you will have FREE access to the Capacity Analysis with Microsoft Fabric course.

If you are interested in having free access to the course, please contact the support team, enter your email address and request access.

Note: Only available to customers after the free trial period.

Using the “” report, provided by Microsoft itself, you can identify much more precisely what capacity your environment needs.
